Abstract
Hydatidosis is endemic in Morocco. The lung is the most frequent site of infection in children. Conservative treatment of this pathology is possible by thoracoscopy. In this study, 20 patients with hydatid cyst of the lung underwent video surgery at the Children's Hospital of Rabat, Morocco, between September 1998 and September 2001.
Three ports are used: a 10-mm port for the endoscope and two operative ports. The hydatid fluid is aspirated percutaneously under visual control to reduce the tension within the cyst. Hypertonic saline solution (15%) is injected within the cyst cavity as a scolicidal agent. The proligerous membrane is isolated in a plastic bag and removed through the 10-mm trocar incision. A capsulectomy is then performed. Bronchial fistulae are closed and the cyst cavity packed. A drain is left in the pleural cavity. The average hospitalization is 3 days.
There were no deaths in our series, and no recurrences during a follow-up of 6 to 36 months.
Conclusion:
Video surgery achieves satisfactory results in the treatment of hydatid cyst of the lung in children.
