Abstract
Background
: Cryptorchidism results from anomalies of migration of the testis and is common in children. This pathology often poses a therapeutic dilemma, especially if the testis is intra-abdominal. Laparoscopy is increasingly important in diagnostic and therapeutic roles.
Patients and Methods
: From September 1, 1997, to September 1, 1999, 35 children with nonpalpable testes underwent laparoscopic exploration at our hospital.
Results
: In nine children, laparoscopy enabled us to avoid a laparotomy. Ten patients underwent inguinal exploration because of a normal vas deferens and vessels and underwent orchidopexy. Ten patients had a one-stage laparoscopic orchidopexy. In six children, a first-stage Fowler-Stephens orchidopexy was performed laparoscopically.
Conclusion
: We describe an algorithm for the management of a nonpalpable testis based on initial laparoscopic evaluation of the nature of the patient's condition.
