Abstract
Background
: The nonpalpable testis continues to challenge surgeons caring for pediatric patients. Traditional approaches are not universally successful and often necessitate transabdominal exploration. The availability of needlescopic telescopes and instruments makes a minimally invasive approach attractive even in young patients.
Methods
: The testis is localized through a 2-mm needlescopic port placed in the umbilicus. If an intra-abdominal testis is identified, two additional ports are placed, and a needlescopic orchidopexy is performed.
Results
: Initial reports of minimally invasive approaches to the nonpalpable testis are encouraging. We have been impressed with the ease and adequacy of the needlescopic dissection and its subjective superiority over the open technique.
Conclusion
: Needlescopic orchidopexy is currently our preferred operation for the pediatric "peeping" or intra-abdominal testis.
