Abstract
The first transabdominal sacrocolpopexy technique was developed in 1957 by Arthur and Savage and then in 1961 by Falk. Many sacrocolpopexy techniques used slings of various material, including Mercilene, Dacron, Gore-Tex, and Marlex (all manufactured by Ethicon, San Angelo, TX). Unfortunately these materials often led to infectious complications or immunologic reactions. At our department, between 1995 and 1998, 21 patients diagnosed with total genital prolapse underwent abdominal sacrocolpopexy with Lyoplant sling. Our results indicate that this surgical technique, taking advantage of a pure collagen sling extracted from bovine pericardium, is associated with an excellent biocompatibility and plasticity profile, low incidence of recurrences, and an excellent degree of patients' satisfaction.
