Ectopic Urethral Ureter Diagnosed During Abdominal Hysterectomy

Abstract

Drainage of an ectopic ureter into the urethra in the female is uncommon and most often is manifested by symptoms. A case of ectopic urethral ureter in an adult woman is reported. She was operated on and received a clinical diagnosis of an ovarian cyst and multiple leiomyomas. Total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed. During the operative procedure and after the uterus had been removed, a 3-cm cystic enlargement was located above the left parametrium and just in the infundibulopelvic ligament. Exploration of the cyst showed that the Foley catheter had entered the left ureter. The ureter was accidentally divided. Diagnosis of a left ectopic ureter was established. Ureteroneocystostomy was performed to restore the intramural anatomy of the ureter. Because of the rarity of the case, the diagnostic pitfalls that generated the management are given, and the international literature is discussed.
