We report here initial findings of a multi-year study of public use of a World Wide Web site for science information. “The Why Files” strives to provide “the science behind the news” in story narratives that contain opportunities for both linear and non-linear navigation. We report results of two studies, one using survey data and another using computer-collected audit trails. The survey revealed that the typical user was male and well-educated, a pattern that reflects both Web users generally and the science-attentive segment of the public particularly. Audit trail data indicated that the site reached as many as 25,000 different individuals during a two-week measurement cycle. The typical pattern of site use was linear, with individuals making heavier use of in-text navigation features than of graphic ones such as page-turning buttons and page numbers. Additional information in glossaries, bibliographies, or via links to other Web sites went largely unused.

As in most forms of unobtrusive data collection, some individuals may suspect or even know they are being observed. Modern browser software may be configured to alert Web users when a server attempts to set a cookie, and this would indicate to an individual that he or she was being “tracked.” However, generally speaking, it is unlikely that users of The Why Files were acutely aware that they are being observed or the purposes of such observation during this study, which took place at a time of much lower awareness of cookies than is true of today.

The session identification number was also created using cookies. When a file was requested from the server for The Why Files, the server checked the individual's computer to capture the random cookie identification number set earlier. Then, it searched its log to see if a page had been requested from the computer with this same cookie identification number within the past 60 minutes. If not, a new session identification number was given to the user. While the 60 minute time period was chosen somewhat arbitrarily, we felt that if the user had not been in The Why Files for at least an hour, it ought to be considered a separate visit or session.

For the six packages for which we report data, we can calculate two averages. First, the average number of links to external sites or other packages of The Why Files, including all pages in a package (i.e., pages with narrative text, story map, bibliography, glossary, and credits) is approximately two. If we only include the pages of the package that contain the narrative text (i.e., exclude story map, glossary, bibliography, and credits) the figure is only slightly less at 1.6 links to external sites and/or non-current packages per page. For comparison, by definition there can only be one “next linear page” for any given page, so in fact opportunities for non-linear navigation to pages outside the current package outnumbered linear opportunities in these data by approximately two-to-one. Adding the within-package non-linear options, there were many opportunities for non-linear navigation.
