Objective: To describe how the use of psychiatric hospitals as institutions for inebriates came about in New South Wales.
Conclusions: A so-called ‘temporary’ solution to a political problem in 1929 led to the psychiatric hospitals in New South Wales becoming repositories for inebriates for the next 75 years. This unsatisfactory situation may be about to change.
