A Fulbright Experience: Building Relationships with Christians and Muslims with HIV/AIDS in Zambia

Abstract

This article chronicles a 2009–10 lecturing and research Fulbright award for The University of Zambia in Lusaka. It explains the background for the application and discusses an overview of the lecturing experience. It also discusses two research projects, the first involving interviews with people who have HIV/AIDS. The second was a survey of religious leaders, two mainline protestant denominations and Muslim Imams. Both the teaching and research experiences have enriched the material used in teaching public administration and public policy courses. The author intends to follow the literature: Share information about their host country with colleagues, recommend that faculty colleagues apply for Fulbright scholarships, become more aware of cultural diversity, encourage students to study abroad, incorporate Fulbright experience into curricula, and share information with community groups.
