Abstract
“Westward the Star of Empire Takes Its Way,” a sculpture outside the Oregon State Capitol in Salem that celebrates the Lewis and Clark Expedition with Sacagawea leading the way, The work's simplified bas-relief form, so different from the three-dimensional literalism of classical statuary, is in keeping with the futuristic, streamlined, machineage character of the building's Art Deco style.
