Abstract
The Soldier and Sailors Memorial Arch in Concord, New Hampshire. Erected in 1892 at the front of the State House, it commemorates the Northern victory in the Civil War and those whom served in that conflict. The triumphal arch as an architectural form originated in ancient Rome when arches inscribed with the exploits of victorious generals were built in the Forum. Concord's more democratic example pays homage to sacrifices by citizens. Photo and comment by Charles T. Goodsell, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
