Abstract
The corrosion resistance effects of levofloxacin (LVFX), Ce(NO3)3, and their mixture on AA2024-T4 in 3.5% NaCl solution were investigated using weight-loss method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization curve and surface morphology analysis. When LVFX and Ce(NO3)3 were mixed at 2:1 molar ratio, the optimum inhibition efficiency was significantly increased to about 86%. The lone pairs of N atoms in LVFX can interact with empty orbitals of aluminum atoms to form a complex. Ce3+ can bind to OH− near the surface of AA2024-T4, which prevents Cl− from reacting with Al and entering into the matrix of AA2024-T4. Hence, an organic-inorganic inhibitor combination based on LVFX and Ce(NO3)3 can enhance the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys as a green corrosion inhibitor.
