Context: The majority of our interventions in psychiatry have less than optimal effectiveness.
Objectives: This paper will explore the interplay between science and art as it applies to increasing the effectiveness of interventions. Reference will be made to how principles of classical art music, for example, can inform aspects of tailored psychiatric treatment options. A summary of results from a trial using ambient Baroque music to improve behavioural problems of individuals in nursing homes with dementia will be presented as well as the rationale leading to the development of a testable hypothesis for the intervention.
Key message: It is reasonable to suggest we be vigilant in seeking new treatment options tempered by the science of an increasing evidence base to assist with resource allocation and building our treatment armamentarium.
Conclusion: Through an understanding of a broad range of biological, psycho-social and culturo-spiritual perspectives, we may help build a more comprehensive treatment base to promote tailored recovery.
