Context: This presentation is designed as a practical ‘how-to’ guide for the Consultant Psychiatrist who has little, or no, experience in the management of anorexia nervosa.
Objectives: Aspects of treatment covered include: assessment, outpatient treatment, inpatient treatment, when to admit, refeeding syndrome, and how to establish and successfully lead a multi-disciplinary team to effectively treat Anorexia Nervosa. The focus of this presentation will be on the early phases of treatment involving establishing a therapeutic alliance, medical stabilisation and weight restoration.

Conclusion: Anorexia Nervosa can be successfully managed in non-specialised settings with the application of the principles outlined in this presentation.
