Globalization has created major opportunities for multinational enterprises (MNEs) – indeed, many observers believe that MNEs are agents of globalization. Undoubtedly their impact will continue to be felt by countries around the globe. However, because their impact and its implications will depend on decisions made by individuals who help shape government policy, it is important to understand the significance of managerial attitudes to government policy. This paper investigates: (a) what managers believe government should or should not do, (b) whether their attitudes depend on their position in the organizational hierarchy; and (c) whether their views are in line with the principles of free market and globalization. The data revealed that the managers are in favour of government intervention in the economy – if it is intended to create a freer operation of the market rather than to restrict it. The implication of the findings for international business, MNEs, and research is discussed.
