Abstract
Preoccupation with the horrors of mass suffering and destruction in one-time Yugoslavia obscures the role of culture and intellectuals in the development and escalation of a vicious civil war. The old Communist leaders, the federal military, a jingoistic and chauvinist media, nationalist fanatics and a supine international community share responsibility for the explosion in former Yugoslavia.
