Abstract
In March this year, Index's specialist on the USSR went to Kiev to do research for our forthcoming issue on press freedom and the environment. There, under the supervision of a squirrel and several 'passers-by', she talked to ex-prisoner Oles Shevchenko, Ukrainian activist Viktor Margitich, and 'the Voice of the Peopte'about Chernobyl, Ukraine, perestroika and the KGB.
