Abstract
Fang Lizhi lost his university job after supporting student demands for democracy. Yet within six months he was able to go on a trip to Rome. Furthermore he met the editor of a ‘reactionary’ Hong Kong magazine — banned in China — and gave a remarkable interview, reaffirming his belief in democracy, students and intellectuals.
