Abstract
'Tens of thousands of people are prevented from working in their particular fields only because their opinions differ from the official line.' So spoke the first document of Charter 77 issued on 1 January 1977. Here Jiří Ruml, who still lives in Czechoslovakia, gives a short history of this 'informal community of people' of which he is a member.
