Abstract
The number of films made in Haiti by Haitians can be counted on the fingers of one hand. According to a recent essay, the first of these dates from as recently as 1962: the second, with a screenplay by Yves Médard, from 1972. With Anita (1979-80) Médard was the first to use film to criticise the social situation under the Duvaliers. The film, and his cultural activities in general, have led him to fall foul of the authorities on several occasions, and in 1983 he was held in prison for a month and then expelled to France. Annick Bapst interviewed him in Paris for Index on Censorship.
