Abstract
‘[Israel's] censors prohibit publication of a death notice for a Palestinian asserting that a family “in the homeland and the diaspora mourns” his passing… A brief news item is censored because it reports that a student group at Bir Zeit University [in the Israeli-occupied West Bank] “sends best wishes on the release” of a Palestinian prisoner. Censorship rules out even a line in an Arab newspaper reporting that “the Israeli authorities released the day before yesterday three residents from Arrabeh in the Jenin district”.’
