Abstract
The following text has been taken from Tansuo (‘Explorations’) a leading unofficial journal which first appeared in Peking in January 1979. The extract is from a special edition of the journal, ‘Democracy or the New Despotism’, and its publication was the immediate cause of the arrest of its publisher and editor, Wei Jingsheng, in March 1979.
