Abstract
Though devoted chiefly to the exposure of censorship, especially in its more brutal and senseless forms, Index is also ready to give space to anyone who puts forward an intelligent argument in its favour. This is what Professor Leighton did, though with important reservations, at a public symposium on the new South African censorship legislation, organised by the Artists' and Writers' Guild (from whose Newsletter No.4, July 1975 this paper is reprinted) in conjunction with the Independent Cultural Association.
Professor Leighton is the head of the English Department at Rand Afrikaans University and served for four years (1969–73) as a member of the South African censorship body, the Publications Control Board.
