Abstract
The 10 kg induction furnace experiments were carried out to investigate the oxidation and decarburization behaviour and melting characteristics of the steel bars with different carbon contents. In addition, the melting rate of steel bars in the molten bath with different carbon contents and stirring intensity was also studied. Under the same heating conditions, high carbon GCr15 bearing steel is more easily oxidized than 20# steel due to its higher carbon content, while the decarbonization is the opposite. The melting rate of GCr15 bearing steel is greater than that of 20# steel because of its higher carbon content and lower melting point. And the melting rate of steel bar under oxidation condition is slightly higher than that of the non-oxidized steel bar. It was also found that an increase in the carbon content and stirring intensity of the molten metal is beneficial to accelerate the melting of steel bar.
