The influence of thermomechanical cycles on ageing behaviour, precipitation kinetics and mechanical properties of Al6060 has been studied quantitatively and qualitatively using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dilatometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microhardness measurements. The obtained results revealed a significant hardness increase due to the formation of fine β″ precipitates and work hardening after and during the peak ageing (PA). Moreover, a quick response to age hardening is observed owing to the acceleration of kinetics. The position of the preageing PrA inside the thermomechanical cycle played a crucial role in the total hardening by promoting fine β″ precipitates. Thermal analysis techniques showed remarkable change in the precipitation sequence and its kinetics especially after plastic deformation, which tended to form more stable precipitates β’ rather than β″.
