Abstract

Panic attacks, panic disorder and agoraphobia affect many people. Yet there are very successful treatments which do not involve medication.
The program Fight or flight was successful in its explanation, depiction and definition of panic disorder. The video went into great detail explaining the symptoms experienced by those suffering from panic disorder and the process that can be implemented in order to manage and overcome panic disorder.
The video is again divided into segments which include: what is panic disorder; what is agoraphobia; what is cognitive-behavioural therapy; information and self-monitoring; breathing; realistic thinking; internal exposure; external (graded) exposure; the role of medication; and groups.
The coverage assists the individual in developing a more comprehensive and complete understanding of the processes they are going through and informs and educates about strategies that can be implemented in order to manage and overcome the disorder.
Those that appeared in the program were able to clearly provide detailed accounts of their experiences of panic and agoraphobia. Their stories were genuine. This allows viewers to personally relate and maintain the information in perspective. Further, Professor Ron Rapee, and Dr Lisa Lampe were able to provide professional insight into the strategies and techniques individuals can be observing in the effort to gain a greater understanding of the processes that are taking place as a result of their disorder. In addition, they identify new techniques that can be implemented in order to manage the problem.
The video is also beneficial for those who may have close relations with anxiety, panic and agoraphobia.
Members of our organisation found the program to be most insightful, comprehensive and beneficial, for the disorders were well explained and the strategies and techniques that could be put into practice were realistic and clearly explained.
