Abstract

In contrast to the following two videos reviewed, members of our organisation did not as successfully receive this video regarding depression. The purpose of the program is to assist individuals in developing a better, more informed view of depression. However, we felt that although there were some interesting points to be made, the program was lacking basic and general information regarding depression.
The most significant flaw was that the program assumed that all types of depression are the result of some major traumatic or negative event that has occurred in the individual's life. Although this may be the case, the program failed to mention how depression can cause people to see everything in a negative light.
Further, while the video stressed the importance of learning what causes the depression as a key component in effectively dealing with the problem, it did not clearly define depression. The program seemed to assume that all the viewers would be able to relate to the situation of the woman who was struggling with getting out of bed in the morning and confronting the world. It did not go into specifics about what depression actually is, using the woman's experience as a definition. In addition, bipolar disorder was not spoken about in detail. It was assumed that individuals were aware of the differences that exist within the area of depression.
Another major omission was that the program did not explore the relationship and links between depression and anxiety. During the discussion period, it became evident that often depression can be a result of high anxiety; however, this point was not elaborated.
The video did make reference to certain monitoring processes, explaining how activities such as having to formulate a daily plan and maintain a mood monitor could benefit individuals dealing with depression. However, the value of these tools was not effectively communicated, thereby not providing a good incentive to use the strategies.
This video assumed far too much prior knowledge and did not cover enough of the basics for it to be very useful. The strategies are fine when you are aware of why to use them and what they are designed to achieve. We feel that this video is better suited to students who have some prior knowledge; however, it is not particularly useful for those people seeking information and help.
