The sympomatology of three Hong Kong Chinese developing psychiatric illness in association with disseminated lupus erythematosus is described. The role of steroid therapy is discussed in relationship to cause, aggravation and potentiation of psychiatric symptoms. The attempt to clarify and classify psychiatric symptoms in this disease into ‘functional’ and ‘toxic-confusional’ states is supported. Culture-bound manifestations were not observed.
