The process of industrial decline in Coventry and the effects on the nature of industry in the city are revealed through an analysis both of net change in manufacturing employment and of the components of change between 1974 and 1982. The results are compared with those for other UK localities. Coventry has suffered far more from in situ decline of manufacturing establishments. It lost relatively few jobs through exits but gained relatively less from the indigenous growth and the in-movement of industry. The implications of these differences for explanations of urban change and for policy are discussed.
