The paper begins with a review of some of the approaches which have in the past been adopted for the study of residential mobility. The limitations are then identified which arise from approaches which either concentrated upon the individual to the exclusion of the institutional context of mobility or, as is currently tending to happen, concentrate upon the institutional analysis to the exclusion of the individual actor. From this discussion an attempt is made to bring together the two aspects of analysis and provide a model which relates the institutional and the individual aspects of residential mobility. In the final section of the paper, material is presented from a New Zealand study of residential mobility to demonstrate the utility of the approach and the range and variety of material it can provide.
