Abstract
The time-dependent proportional hazards model is used to analyse first achievement by married couples of a home in one of the two major British housing tenures, owner-occupation and local authority accommodation. The effect of demographic and socioeconomic influences such as age at marriage, social class, and previous housing and fertility histories are estimated using a combination of life-table and regression approaches. All these factors are found to have substantial independent effects. The model is applied to data for three marriage cohorts in the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys' 1976 Family Formation Survey, and conclusions are drawn about the extent to which the above factors have changed in importance over time.
