This paper gives a method for analyzing qualitative characteristics of a trend curve. First, a small segment of the trend curve is examined in terms of a ‘peak’, a ‘bottom’, and a ‘slope’. Second, a sequence of these qualitative local trends is topologically investigated. Third, to measure the qualitative similarity between two trend curves a qualitative similarity coefficient is proposed. Last, an empirical application is given.
