The paper discusses methods for analyzing statistically homogeneous maps. The specific example concerns rural population density surfaces, and the theories of Bylund and Hudson are used to justify the search for pattern properties in the data. The objectives of map description and map explanation are distinguished and the need to use process theories both to decide on which statistical techniques to use and in the interpretation of results is emphasized.
