Abstract
Patent opinions are legal advice rendered by patent attorneys relating in some way to issues surrounding one or more patents. These opinions take many forms and are prepared for a variety of purposes. Patent opinions are of particular importance in the case of developing generic medicines. This paper provides a brief description of various forms of patent opinions, the reasons for obtaining such opinions and their role in developing generic medicines. The key characteristics of a competent patent opinion are also discussed.
