Abstract
Hair-coloring technology today easily allows naturallooking tints in all color ranges and even the fantasy colors favored by some. The chemistry and mechanism of the different action of hair-coloring agents is revisited. A review of reported adverse events relating to the use of hair-coloring agents is presented. Allergic contact dermatitis to p-phenylenediamine and more rarely to some other dyestuff remains an occasional occurrence that can be severe. No long-term adverse effect has been identified in humans with regard to mutagenicity and oncogenicity.
