Photoallergic and Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Butyl-methoxydibenzoylmethane

Abstract

Photoallergic contact sensitivity can occur with almost any chemical sunscreen agent, including para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and its derivatives, salicylates, cinnamates, anthranilates, benzophenones, and dibenzoylmethanes.¹ Reactions to butyl-methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDM, Parsol 1789) have been reported rarely from Europe, with contact allergy reported in only four patients, and photocontact allergy in only nine.^2–6 To date reactions to BMDM have not been reported in the United States, perhaps because it has only recently been introduced here.
