Abstract
Previously unknown allergenic compounds of Balsam of Peru were identified by high performance liquid chromatography. Fractions were collected and patch testing was performed. Methylcinnamate was identified as an ingredient of Balsam of Peru and its presence was confirmed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Commer- cially obtained pure methylcinnamate was subsequently tested in 15 patients sensitive to Balsam of Peru. The significance of methylcinnamate as a Balsam of Peru allergen is discussed and related to the crossreactivity of this substance with 2-ethoxyethyl- p-methoxycinnamate.
