A Pack of Sun Dogs in Greenland

Sun dogs, parahelic circles, circumzenithal, and tangent arcs are optical phenomenon caused by the refraction of light through suspended, hexagonal ice crystals. This display was witnessed by the Expeditions 7 team, consisting of 5 Americans and 2 Icelanders as they drove 3 specially modified Arctic trucks during the world’s first longitudinal crossing of Greenland by motor vehicle (April–May 2018). The group collected snow samples for the University of Utah, recorded meteorological observations, and used a 12 V incubator to look for the presence of bacteria in the ice pack.
