Abstract

Photograph taken at 64.7359°S, 62.5955°W, Danco Island, Antarctica, on March 20, 2019. Danco Island is in the Errera Channel, which was first charted by Adrien de Gerlache during a Belgian Antarctic Expedition from 1897 to 1899. The Antarctica Marathon has been held annually on King George Island since 1995. Two hundred participants attend the marathon each year, with many waiting more than 2 y on a waitlist to be able to attend and join the exclusive Seven Continents Marathon Club. Participants arrive at King George Island after 2 to 3 d spent crossing the Drake Passage by charter ship. After completion of the marathon day, they continue on to complete a 10-d total journey by ship to other points in Antarctica. Due to environmental regulations, only 100 runners can compete each day, and there are 2 d of competition. Capt. Paul Dhillon, 12 Field Ambulance and general practitioner/emergency department physician in Canada, was the ship's doctor on the Akademik Sergey Vavilov across the Drake Passage and on King George Island for day 1 of the marathon in 2019.
