In Deshwal R, Mohd I, Basnet S “Nifedipine for the Treatment of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema” (Wilderness Environ Medicine. 2012;23:7−10), the authors describe results from their study of 110 HAPE patients. These patients were treated with standard therapy (descent and oxygen) and randomized to receive either nifedipine vs placebo. Treatment vs placebo groups were compared on time to normalization of oxygen saturation, duration of hospital stay, and resolution of lung crepitations using an unpaired t test. The authors did not include specific comparison parameters between the two groups because the variable differences were not significant.
