Abstract
Osteoporosis affects approximately 75 million people worldwide. Because of limitations in the widely accepted screening guidelines (especially for men), the number of individuals affected with osteoporosis is probably underestimated.
This article reviews the epidemiology of osteoporosis, as well as the risk factors for its development, as illustrated by the case of a 71 year old smoker and COPD patient. It further reviews the screening guidelines for men including special populations of men, such as those undergoing androgen deprivation therapy, and concludes with a discussion of treatment options. Finally there is a detailed discussion of the case resolution.
