Abstract

The single volume Manual of Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging has now been expanded into a three volume series. This is the third title of the set, the other two are Canine and Feline Thoracic Imaging and Canine and Feline Musculoskeletal Imaging.
This manual is substantial, clearly written in a fairly consistent format, which facilitates the ability of readers to find information. The 20 contributing authors are mostly, although not exclusively, diploma holders in veterinary diagnostic imaging and all are highly qualified in their respective subject areas.
Radiography and ultrasound receive the greatest coverage, however computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging applications are also mentioned and well illustrated.
The first three chapters are devoted to the abdominal imaging approach and to the use of radiology and ultrasound as imaging techniques. The remaining 16 chapters are devoted to the imaging anatomy of the abdominal organs.
Most chapters begin with a review of the pertinent anatomy, leading to a discussion of differentials for the relevant radiographic and echographic signs, and then conclude with an overview of additional imaging modalities and imaging findings for specific conditions. All chapters end with a number of well chosen references.
The most often cited drawback of the previous manual was its lack of radiographic images, as it contained only line drawings. The inclusion of many high quality, accurately reproduced radiographs and ultrasonographic images probably represents this book's greatest improvement over its predecessor. Although well written, the level of detail makes this manual a consulting volume while reviewing some difficult abdominal radiographs. Anyone studying diagnostic imaging will find much of use here, and the book is still accessible enough for those with a more general interest.
