Abstract
“Their level of volunteer service is far more than exemplary, it is a valuable legacy for which we will always be grateful.”
From their respective posts in Rostock and Berlin, Germany, Kerstin Thurow and Hilmar Weinmann together collected and shared about 1000 news items that filled about 240 pages with “Literature Highlights” for the past 48 issues of JALA without ever missing a deadline or uttering a word of complaint. The column was their idea, and it was their initiative, expertise and energy that built it into the single most popular and well-read feature of our journal.
A wise but unknown person once said “The road to success is not crowded because while most are looking for ways to take, the truly successful people are finding ways to give.” Fortunately for us, Kerstin and Hilmar's success also has been our success. Their level of volunteer service is far more than exemplary, it is a valuable legacy for which we will always be grateful.
This issue marks the end of the Kerstin and Hilmar “Literature Highlights” era. The torch has been passed to a new pair of volunteer co-authors. In 2011, Ta1 Murthy of Boston, MA, and Neil Benn of London, England, will keep the JALA “Literature Highlights” column moving forward. I am confident they will do so with the same enthusiasm that Kerstin and Hilmar used to set the high standards that now guide Tal and Neil.
Our society succeeds because its foundation is rooted in this kind of altruistic sense of community and cooperation. Two heads have always been better than one—be they in our journal, our LabAutopedia wiki, at our conferences, in our blog discussions, or throughout our many other programs. In 2010, JALA was brought to you by the diverse and diligent contributions of 188 authors and 178 manuscripts reviewers. As we begin this holiday season, let's celebrate their generosity, and as we look toward 2011, let's all consider traveling that road to success by finding ways to give.
