Heidolph Brinkmann
Application Note: Lara CLR for Polymerization Control
Heidolph Brinkmann offers a new application note that demonstrates how the Lara Controlled Laboratory Reactor (CLR) is able to accurately and reproducibly control polymerization experiments. The note describes how the Lara CLR is used to automatically control the addition of monomer, initiator, and reagent where both linear and variable rates of addition of feed materials are used, and demonstrates that the Lara CLR can automatically ensure that the molecular weight and structure of the resulting polymer can be predicted, controlled, and reproduced.
The first experiment is run with a predetermined increasing monomer addition rate. The second experiment is run with a linear rate of monomer addition and a decreasing variable rate of initiator addition. In both, the monomer addition rate is gradually increased over several hours to ensure that the relative concentration of monomer stays constant throughout the multiple feed step of the reaction. The test polymerization reaction was exothermic, so experiments included the use of feedback loops.
Technical Bulletin: Lara CLR for Acid Chloride Coupling Reaction
A new technical bulletin from Heidolph Brinkmann describes how acid chloride is automatically fed over a 3-h period into the Lara CLR together with simultaneous sodium hydroxide addition to control the pH in the region of 6.5. The coupling of the acid chloride to the sodium salt of an oxy anion is a biphasic reaction in which the temperature has to be maintained at 10 °C to maximize yield of the final ester product. Efficient stirring of the coupling reaction is essential as the product forms a thick slurry.
According to Heidolph Brinkmann, the experimental data demonstrates that the Lara CLR was well suited for automating chemistry of this complex nature where pH control, reaction viscosity, and isothermal temperature control were all challenges to maximizing yield. With minimal training, the users were quickly able to set up the system, get the unit running, and reproducibly perform the acid coupling reaction to generate high yields of the ester product.

BioVyon C18 Silica Columns and Microplates
A new range of BioVyon C18 silica columns and microplates is now available from Porvair Sciences for use in low volume solid-phase extraction (SPE) assays. According to Porvair, immobilizing the C18 sorbent within the porous BioVyon polymer has created a novel, high-surface area matrix that provides unmatched control of flow rate. In addition, the immobilized C18 sorbent cannot form liquid channels and does not require inert frits to support it thereby minimizing hold-up volume. The combination of these attributes enables this new range of SPE columns and microplates to provide higher consistency and greater recoveries for small sample-volume assays.
BioV yon C18 is offered in 96-well microplates as a 10 mg per well loading suitable for low-volume bioassay preparation and clean-ups. In the 1-mL cartridge format, BioVyon C18 is available in a choice of 12.5-, 25-, and 50-mg loadings.
