Abstract

Absorption Systems
CellPort Technologies Assay System
CellPort Technologies is a new assay system that can provide the preclinical in vitro data on drug transporter-mediated drug–drug interactions needed when submitting a new drug application. Using a series of novel cell lines in which transporter expression has been manipulated, in the bidirectional assay format designated by the FDA, the assay system clearly determines which efflux transporter(s) a test compound interacts with, if any.

Arrayjet
Ultra-Marathon Inkjet Microarrayer
The new Ultra-Marathon is based on the same platform as its predecessors, the Marathon and Super-Marathon Inkjet Microarrayers, and uses piezoelectric inkjet technology for the high-speed production of high-quality microarrays. The Ultra-Marathon is available with and without the Microplate Stacker Module, and adds slide-handling capability to the platform to increase its capacity to 1000 1 × 3-in. (25 × 75 mm) glass slides. In isolation, according to Arrayjet, this represents a significant enhancement, but when combined with the Array Multiplier software module, which enables users to specify almost any number of miniarrays to be printed on each slide (space permitting), one could imagine 1000 slides each bearing, for example, 16 miniarrays. This means that a total of 16,000 microarrays could be produced in a single, fully automated print run.
For more information, visit www.arrayjet.co.uk.
Array Multiplier
The Array Multiplier software module brings additional capabilities and functionalities to Arrayjet's range of inkjet microarrayers, including the Marathon and Sprint microarray platforms, by enabling printing of multipad or miniarrays.

Exeter Analytical
Application Note: Analysis of Explosive Compounds
This new application note (TM212) describes a safe and accurate analytical method for accurately determining the percentage nitrogen (N) content of explosive materials such as pentanitrocellulose, dekanitrocellulose, and pyroxylin, using the Model CE440 Elemental Analyzer. Application note TM212 also demonstrates how theoretical values of nitrogen compare closely with data obtained from standard method MIL-STD-286B (T-209.9).

Technical Note: Automated Elemental Analysis of Organic Carbon in Sediment Samples
Technical Note 230 describes how sediment samples are placed in acid to dissolve the inorganic material and then filtered. The filters are then analyzed using an Exeter Analytical Model CE440 CHN elemental analyzer. The optimized Model CE440 methodology uses a combustion method to convert the sample elements in the sediment samples to simple gases (CO2, H2O, and N2). Elements such as halogens and sulfur are removed by scrubbing agents. The resultant gases are homogenized and controlled under exact pressure, temperature, and volume conditions. The homogenized gases are then passed through a known sample volume. This volume of sample gas products is then passed through a series of steady state detectors with CO2 and H2O traps placed between the first two detectors, this enables accurate quantification of the three elements of interest (carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen).

According to Thermo, at such low temperatures, metabolic activity is not known to occur, greatly increasing cell viability. As such, these freezers fulfill the requirements of many laboratories, including those of clinical research, life sciences, and pharmaceutical organizations.
Using advanced mechanical refrigeration technology, the freezers offer important advantages over units that rely on liquid nitrogen as a cooling medium. There is greater temperature uniformity throughout the freezer and the interior storage space is maximized, enabling a capacity of up to 21,600 samples. Furthermore, all samples are maintained below the critical temperature of −130°C.

Uniqsis
Application Notes: FlowSyn and Drug Discovery Chemistries
A growing collection of application notes by Uniqsis describes some of the drug discovery chemistries to which the FlowSyn Continuous Flow Reactor has been applied, including reaction scale-up and optimization, and a comparison with batch microwave chemistries.

FlowSyn Continuous Flow Reactor
Reactions on the FlowSyn Continuous Flow Reactor can now be carried out at up to 260°C and pressures up to 1000 psi (∼70 Bar), making high-activation energy chemistries, which may previously have required a catalyst or use of a microwave reactor, potential candidates for continuous flow synthesis. Other improvements include easier pump priming and refinements to the automated reaction control so that the user can control the amount of the pre- and postplug dispersion phases collected with the steady-state reaction product.

Velocity11
Technical Note: Automating the Analysis of Cell Viability
A new technical note describes how a combination of the Velocity11 Bravo liquid handler, BenchCel plate handling system, and the CellTiter-Glo kit from Promega can automate the analysis of cell viability. Using the described protocol up to 65 plates can be run without user intervention. The typical throughput for the described setup was found to be about 3 h for 50 plates, depending on exact protocol and liquid-handling steps.
Plates are delivered to the Bravo, reagent is added, and plates are placed on shaking devices. The reagent is added without tip touching, therefore, only one tip box is needed for the total run. The plates are transported back to the BenchCel for room temperature incubation, directly followed by signal detection on a microplate reader. The automated workstation ensures that all process and incubation times are accurately managed, to ensure reliable and repeatable results.

Technical Note: Automated Workstations for Bulk Reagent and Cell Dispensing Applications
An automated Bulk Reagent and Cell Plating Workstation can be created using existing dispensers or a new dispenser purchased through Velocity11. An optional second dispenser integrated with the BenchCel Workstation can further increase dispensing throughput from 70 to up to 130 microplates/h.

Technical Poster: Fully Integrated Compound Repository and Management System
A new technical poster from Velocity11 describes a high-throughput plate and tube sample-processing system installed at the Eskitis Institute for Cell and Molecular Therapies, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. The poster describes the technical, logistical, and intellectual property challenges overcome in establishing the fully integrated compound repository and management system. Using the Velocity11 BioCel automation system, the Eskitis Institute set up an environmentally controlled plate and tube processing system where compound integrity is maintained without compromising flexibility.

BenchCel R Platform
According to Velocity11, its all-new BenchCel R Platform can handle more integrations, rack styles, types of labware, and capacity options than any other compact automated workstation. Features including the ability to integrate more instruments per side; the flexibility to work with lidded microplates, deep-well plates, and tip boxes; and a choice of two-, four-, or six-rack configurations enable the BenchCel R Platform to productively handle more applications.
The BenchCel R Platform is an integrated benchtop robot and microplate storage solution that delivers the speed and precision of a full-sized automation platform. It features a high-speed plate shuttle that accesses integrated microplate stacks and peripheral microplate-based instruments including liquid handlers, dispensers, readers, sealers, washers, centrifuges, microplate storage devices, and more with a customizable, modular design.
