Abstract

“This new section of the ALA Web site is devoted to bringing more news to ALA members on a more timely basis.”
Two of JALA's most popular regular columns are its “World News” and “Meetings and Events Calendar.” Many ALA members report that these pages are often the first they browse to get a quick feel for what's what and who's who around the industry.
Unlike the scientific papers published in each of JALA's six annual issues, regular columns are not officially peer reviewed. They are assembled by the editorial staff, and submitted to the production staff as late in the publication cycle as possible to enable them to be as timely as possible. To accelerate this process and better meet the expectations of today's information-on-demand world, ALA has launched “JALA World News Online” at http://labautomation.org.
This new section of the ALA Web site is devoted to bringing more news to ALA members on a more timely basis. It is updated weekly with volunteer assistance from Douglas Gurevitch of the University of California San Diego's Bioengineering Department. Like its printed page counterpart, “JALA World News Online” features new product announcements, company news, and a calendar of meetings and events being presented by related nonprofit organizations. Because “JALA World News Online” is refreshed weekly, it is able to share news that otherwise may not have appeared in print because of production cycle lead times.
“JALA World News Online” also offers a growing database of free application notes and technical notes along with links to the technical education sections of LabAutomation exhibitor Web sites. Collectively, these educational resources provide access to a spectrum of information that can assist ALA members searching for technical insight and advice.
“JALA World News Online” is available to ALA members as an exclusive benefit of membership. It is separate and different from “JALA Online,” which archives all of JALA's scientific content from March 1999 to the present.
We hope you will take advantage of “JALA World News Online.” Like all ALA initiatives, it exists as a tool to serve and support ALA members; but like all tools, it will not be helpful if it just sits in its toolbox. I encourage you to visit http://labautomation.org, click on “JALA World News Online,” log in, and browse around. Make this part of your weekly routine, and see what happens.
Sincerely,
