En août 2003, un sondage national de 485 (taux de réponse de 56 %) gestionnaires et dirigeants de services de santé canadiens ont dressé l'ordre d'importance de 31 compétences de gestion et évalué leur maîtrise de ces compétences. Si les répondants ont semblé d'accord sur l'importance des 31 compétences, nous avons constaté un écart entre l'importance perçue et le niveau de maîtrise admis par les répondants, écart sur lequel le Collège canadien des directeurs de services de santé devrait se pencher.
