Abstract
To assess how Canadian healthcare chief executive officers are coping with a decade of regionalization, hospital mergers and other health system changes, a national survey was conducted from January through May, 2000. The survey covered a broad range of topics including the trends that are driving change, career preparation necessary to address the trends, skills required to be an effective leader, and perceived changes to typical CEO responsibilities. The survey results significantly contribute to the national dialogue on sustaining leadership and planning for succession in healthcare organizations.
