Laryngeal electromyography has proved useful for the evaluation of neurologic disorders
of the larynx. The techniques for this procedure are also well suited to investigate
disorders of the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. The responses from the thyroarytenoid
muscles, the cricothyroid muscles, and the cricopharyngeus muscle can offer information to
aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and in some cases, treatment of dysphagia. A general
review of electromyographic responses with sample tracings from the larynx are included in
this article.
