Abstract

This is a very salutary book, a major work which will become a very valuable tool for every orthopaedic trainee and young orthopaedic surgeon, as it is meant to encourage decision-making in clinical practice. It emphasizes clinical judgment over surgical technique, which is of utmost importance in pediatric orthopaedics. Conceived by a forum of renowned international authors, this 527-page book is a framework of reference for clinical decision-making and is comprised of eight major sections according to clinical conditions: Deformities, Dislocations, Deficiencies, Discrepancies of limb length, Decreased joint mobility, Paralyses, Epiphyseal and physeal problems, and Infections.
These are easily approachable chapters and subchapters, and the subdivisions are cleverly designed so as to cover all clinical aspects, leading the reader through diagnosis, symptoms, indications and treatment options, with clear illustrations for easy identification, through differential diagnosis, and then to management, be it conservative or surgical, with recommendations and expected outcome.
The material is punctuated with quotations from specialty literature for easy reference, and the information is within immediate reach, whereas the attractive graphic presentation in simple schemas and tables and the friendly colors catch the eye and make it focus on the essential, facilitating immediate comprehension.
This is a very comprehensive, concise book, not to be missed by any resident in orthopaedics preparing for the final orthopaedic board examination or equivalence, by trainees during pediatric orthopaedic rotation, or by any medical students in any other instructional program.
The authors were able to provide the young orthopaedic surgeon with a very practical book, conferring a modern approach to the traditional philosophy of pediatric orthopaedics.
