Abstract
This article reports on a nationwide study of the use of direct mail advertising by public and private colleges and universities of all sizes. Presidents and the advertising heads of about 200 of these institutions provided their views on how they use direct mail advertising and its effectiveness in achieving institutional goals, especially student recruitment. The authors of this article also suggest ways in which direct mail advertising might be made even more productive in positioning a college or university against its competition.
